Cookie Policy

In plain English

We use only the cookies we need to keep you signed in and to remember your preferences in your browser. No advertising cookies, no analytics, no tracking pixels. That's why you don't see a cookie banner.

1. What are cookies?#

Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device. They’re used to remember information about you between page loads — for example, that you’re signed in. Some cookies are set by the website you’re visiting (“first-party”) and some are set by other domains the page loads from (“third-party”).

Browsers also expose a similar mechanism called localStorage, which works like a cookie but never gets sent to the server. We use localStorage too, and we describe it below for completeness.

2. What we use, exactly#

The Golfle website uses only strictly necessary cookies and a small amount of first-party browser storage. Specifically:

  • Authentication cookies (set by Supabase, prefixed sb-): keep you signed in once you’ve authenticated. Without these, you’d have to sign in on every page load. These are essential for the sign-in feature to work.
  • Game state in localStorage (key golfle-game-storage): stores the current state of each game mode (your guesses, whether the round is over, etc.) so you can refresh the page or come back later without losing your progress.
  • Stats in localStorage (key golfle-stats-storage): stores your local guess distribution, current daily streak, and history so the Stats panel works for guests as well as signed-in users.

What we do NOT use:

  • No analytics cookies (no Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no Plausible, no Vercel Analytics).
  • No advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or conversion-tracking tags.
  • No third-party social-media trackers (Meta Pixel, X pixel, TikTok pixel, etc.).
  • No fingerprinting techniques.

3. Why we don't show a cookie banner#

Under the EU ePrivacy Directive and the GDPR, consent is required for cookies that are notstrictly necessary. Because every cookie we set is strictly necessary for the Service to function (authentication and first-party game state), no cookie banner is required. If we ever add an optional cookie — for example, an analytics tool — we’ll add a banner before it loads.

4. Cookies set by sub-processors#

When you sign in with Google, Google may set cookies on its own domains as part of its sign-in flow. Those cookies are governed by Google’s own privacy policy. They are necessary to complete the sign-in process and we do not control or read them.

5. How to control cookies on your device#

You can clear or block cookies from your browser’s settings. Note that blocking our authentication cookies will prevent you from staying signed in. If you do that, you can still play the game as a guest (using localStorage) but the leaderboard, friends, and cross-device stats will not work.

  • Firefox
  • Safari
  • Edge

Local storage can be cleared the same way (most browsers expose “Clear site data” in the same panel).

6. Changes to this Cookie Policy#

If we change the cookies we use, we will update this page and bump the “Updated” date at the top. If we introduce a non-essential cookie, we will obtain your consent first.
