8 guesses to name a mystery NBA player. The clues are what they do, not who they are.
The card
A rotation player from the 2025–26season is chosen. You are shown a scouting card with eight per-game stats — minutes, points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, threes attempted and free throws attempted — drawn as ranges across the whole pool, and nothing else. No team, no position, no height, no age, no number.
That absence is the game. The usual mystery-player puzzle tells you the team and the position on the first guess and becomes a roster search from there. This one asks you to describe a player before you name them, which is a different skill and, we think, the more interesting one.
A guess
Type any player who has appeared this season. Each of their eight stats comes back arrowed: an arrow up means the mystery player does more of it, an arrow down means less. A green cell is a match — the two are the same for practical purposes on that stat — and a tinted cell is close.
Every arrow narrows the card. Guess a 26-point scorer and see the arrow point down, and the points bar shrinks to everything under that. After a few guesses the card reads like a description: 18–24 points, more than 6 assists, under 1.5 threes. The name follows the description.
The signature
After 4misses the card reveals the mystery player’s signature: the one stat on which they are least like everybody else in the pool, with where they rank. “Among the top 5% for blocks” is a real clue and still a behaviour, not a name tag. It arrives halfway so the first half is a genuine read and the second half is not a lottery.
How you win
Name them inside 8 guesses. Fewer is better, and the first guess is a genuine read rather than a shot in the dark.

- Open with a player who sits in the middle of everything.A 15-point, 5-rebound, 3-assist wing splits every bar roughly in half. A superstar tells you only that the mystery player does less of everything, which you already suspected.
- Rebounds and blocks both point up
- You are looking for size. Guess a big and let threes attempted sort the modern ones from the old-fashioned ones.
- Free throws attempted are high and threes are low
- That is somebody who lives at the rim - a driver or a post scorer, not a shooter.Free-throw rate is the most honest stat on the card. It cannot be padded from the perimeter.
- The card is narrow and you still cannot place them
- Guess the best-known player who fits, even if you doubt it.A wrong guess that fits still tightens every bar it touches. A right guess you never made tightens nothing.
The mystery player is always somebody with at least 40 games and 20 minutes a night this season - 234 players at the moment - because a game about habits needs a player who has shown some. Anybody in the league can be guessed.
Scoring
A solve in one guess scores 100 on the shared leaderboard, in eight scores 13, and a miss scores 0. Linear on purpose — two people who took the same number of guesses finish level.
One player a day, the same for everybody. Unlimited picks a fresh one whenever you want another.
