How Golfle rates golfers

A number between 0 and 100 next to a real person’s name looks like a measurement. If we let it look like one without saying otherwise, we would effectively be publishing invented facts about people who never agreed to it. So the label travels with the rating everywhere: on the card, above the bench, and here.

There is a real difference between the two things, and we keep them separate in the data itself. Every rating we store is marked either editorial (an opinion, like the ones in the game today) or measured (derived from licensed season statistics). The game shows you which you are looking at.

Each golfer is assessed across five areas — Power, Positioning, Approach, Short Game and Putting — using their widely reported, publicly discussed playing style and reputation. If a golfer is known for enormous distance and wayward driving, that is what the card says. If a golfer is known as an outstanding putter who does not hit it far, the card says that too.

Every card carries a short note explaining the characterisation behind it, so you can disagree with a specific judgement rather than a black box.

• Not scraped from anyone’s website. Ratings are written by us.
• Not a prediction. Nothing here forecasts how anyone will play, and Golfle has no betting or wagering features.

A raw assessment is standardised against everyone else in the pool before it is displayed, so a rating tells you where a golfer sits relative to the other golfers in the game, not their position on some absolute scale. That is why nobody is rated 100 and nobody is rated 0.

Ratings are versioned. The set currently in play is editorial-2025.1. If we revise our opinion, the version changes and old rounds keep the ratings they were played with — a finished scorecard is never reinterpreted.

Golfle uses golfers’ names and publicly known professional reputations to write commentary about their play. We do not use photographs, likenesses, signatures, tour logos, or team marks, and we do not suggest that any golfer or organisation is affiliated with, sponsors, or endorses Golfle. They are not.

Tell us. If you are a rated golfer, or represent one, and you want your assessment corrected or removed entirely, we will do it — a rating is an opinion we hold, not one we need to keep publishing over the subject’s objection.
